Mindfulness is a state of awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally. It involves observing one’s thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations objectively, accepting them the way they are without judging them to be good or bad. It also involves focusing on the present moment, rather than ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. Therefore, mindfulness has become a tool to avoid self-criticism and judgement while also identifying and managing difficult emotions.
Mindfulness is originally rooted in Buddhist and Hindu traditions and its emergence in Western culture can be attributed to Jon Kabat-Zinn, who used teachings from mindfulness to inform approaches towards treating mental health difficulties. Since then, mindfulness practices have been integrated into several therapeutic approaches, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Most mindfulness-based approaches involve practicing awareness, meditation, and breathing exercises. These practices may be done formally, where one takes the time to meditate, or informally, where one practices awareness of thoughts and feelings in everyday situations. Research has shown that practicing mindfulness is effective for protecting against mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and has also been effective in lowering stress levels, chronic pain, and even feelings of isolation.
